UNDO had the privilege of attending Carbon Removal Day 2025 in Ottawa – an event that underscored Canada’s growing leadership in scaling high-integrity carbon removal. Hosted by Carbon Removal Canada, the sold-out event brought together over 200 industry leaders, policymakers, investors, and scientists to discuss how Canada can move from policy to progress in carbon removal.
Our CEO and Founder, Jim Mann, attended as one of the few international representatives at the event. Reflecting on the day, Jim shared:
“Canada is stepping up in a big way. The government’s leadership and early policy moves are invaluable, not just for the Canadian market, but for the global carbon removal industry.”
As countries worldwide grapple with scaling high-quality carbon removal, Canada is making decisive moves that could set a new global precedent.
A Defining Moment for Canada’s Carbon Removal Industry

From the opening session, it was clear that Canada is serious about accelerating carbon removal. The room was packed with stakeholders from across the sector, including:
– Government decision-makers from Natural Resources Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada
– Leading banks and financial institutions, including CIBC, RBC, and Evok Innovations
– Carbon removal pioneers working on the ground to scale solutions
– Researchers and policy experts shaping the future of verification and trust
The event wasn’t just about discussion – it was about action. Three major announcements set the tone for what’s ahead:
1. Canada’s First-Ever Carbon Removal Procurement
A landmark moment for Canada’s climate policy came with the announcement from Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor, President of the Treasury Board. The Treasury Board Secretariat issued a Request for Information (RFI) from carbon removal suppliers, marking Canada’s first-ever move toward purchasing carbon removal credits.
This is a major step forward, one that could provide essential demand signals to the industry and de-risk investment in high-integrity solutions.
2. $3 Million Fund for Carbon Removal Innovation
In another exciting move, the B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) announced a $3 million Call for Carbon Dioxide Removal Innovation. This funding aims to accelerate the commercialization of carbon removal technologies across Canada.
3. A New Industry Dashboard for Transparency
Transparency and accountability are critical for scaling carbon removal markets. Carbon Removal Canada announced the launch of a new industry dashboard, funded by RBC Tech for Nature, to track market trends, project data, and industry developments.
For the industry to gain credibility and attract investment, publicly accessible, verifiable data will be essential, this initiative is a step in the right direction.
Why Canada’s Leadership Matters
With the global policy landscape uncertain, Canada’s proactive stance is setting an example. Early adopters, funding mechanisms, and collaboration across sectors are all key ingredients for scaling carbon removal.
Jim noted:
“The signal Canada is sending to the market is significant. These early policy moves show real leadership, and they’re exactly what’s needed to accelerate investment in high-quality carbon removal.”
Strong government backing creates a ripple effect, it builds confidence for private investors, encourages corporate buyers, and helps the industry scale faster and with integrity.
Canada is uniquely positioned to lead, thanks to:
– A strong climate policy framework
– Geologic storage potential for durable carbon removal
– A growing ecosystem of CDR innovators
– Strong public-private partnerships driving action
However, long-term policy stability and clear financial incentives will be key to ensuring this momentum translates into real-world impact.
Trust and Integrity: The Cornerstones of Carbon Removal

One of the standout sessions of Carbon Removal Day 2025 was the panel discussion on building trust and integrity in carbon removal markets. Moderated by J.P. Jepp (Nexus Climate & Energy Strategy), the session featured:
– Anu Khan – Carbon Removal Standards Initiative
– Jackie Mercer – Environment and Climate Change Canada
– Jim Mann – UNDO
UNDO is committed to high-integrity carbon removal, with:
– Peer-reviewed trials validating CO₂ removal and soil health benefits
– Transparent digital tracking, ensuring every tonne is traceable to a specific farm
– Deep science monitoring sites, delivering robust, high-quality data
Trust and transparency will determine the success of carbon removal as a credible climate solution, and Canada is taking the right steps to get it right.
Bringing the Ecosystem Together: The Power of Collaboration
What made Carbon Removal Day stand out was its breadth of participation. Not focussing solely on policy or technology, this event brought together the entire carbon removal ecosystem:
– Banks and investors assessing market readiness
– Corporates and buyers looking to support removals
– Researchers and policy experts shaping verification standards
– Government leaders making critical funding and regulatory decisions
This kind of cross-sector collaboration is exactly what is needed to scale carbon removal effectively.
What’s Next for Canada’s Carbon Removal Industry?
Carbon Removal Day 2025 was a defining moment – but the real work is just beginning.
To turn policy into action, the industry will need:
– Long-term policy commitments to drive investor confidence
– Financial incentives for early adopters and risk-takers
– Stronger verification frameworks to maintain trust and credibility
For UNDO, it was an honour to be part of these discussions. As we continue our work in Canada and beyond, we remain committed to scaling carbon removal with integrity, transparency, and scientific excellence.
A huge thank you to Carbon Removal Canada and everyone who made this event a success.
